We like to feature the innovative ideas our members have so that we can all learn from them. This week, we are featuring Dane Brown who finding ways to develop a reliable income stream that will give him the freedom to pursue all the cool things that life offers. Here is an interview I did where he let us in on his secrets of success.

Ben: A lot of people have a hard time starting because the ideas at the beginning are very vague and fuzzy. Thinking back to the very beginning, what was the idea that inspired you when you first started?

Dane: The idea that inspired me when I first started was the notion that I can create whatever lifestyle I want by simply taking action. Specifically, I want to have a reliable source of income that allows me to spend time on creative projects, pursue continuous learning goals, and travel freely. For me, money is not the objective. Freedom is the objective. I want to fully liberate my finite amount of time on this plane of existence so that I can spend it doing and being whatever my heart desires.

Ben: I know you are setting a few different goals every week or two? What is your actual process?

Dane: My process is constantly evolving but, currently, it goes something like this: Every week I set 7-day targets relating to the specific 3 month goals that I have previously outlined. Each evening I set my "top 3" for the following day. These are the 3 most important to-do items that I commit to doing first thing (before I check my email or do anything else that will distract me). Each item in the my daily top 3 relates to one of the weekly targets. Wake up. Coffee. Top 3. Bam! No negotiating.

I've learned that if I don't do it this way I will keep pushing back the not so fun to-do items. Usually after my top 3 I'll do some exercise which, in combination with already having done the most important things on my list, leaves me primed to tackle the remaining to-do items for the day.

Ben: What have been some of the surprises along the way? What were some of you unexpected "learnings" (i.e. what didn't go the way you expected that required you to re-think a few things)?

Dane: One realization I've come to is that, while you're alive, there is no such state as "done". The entire universe is nothing but constant change . The person you are changes over time (even from day to day) and, naturally, so do your desires and goals. Since I've recognized this I have a much easier time readjusting my path as needed, rather than trying to force myself to adhere to a plan that is no longer optimal.

Ben: If you could go back in time 1 year and give yourself advice, what would it be?

Dane: If I could go back in time one year to give myself advice I would say the same thing that I would now say to anyone, any time: Watch this video once a month. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERbvKrH-GC4.

Thanks Dane!
