The First Law of Emotional Dynamics
The first law of thermodynamics says that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another. A while ago, I realized that the same was true of emotional dynamics - the key is in transforming the energy from one form to another.
Emotional energy can be expressed in two basic ways. It can come through us as product ive, enthusiastic work towards important goals or it can get diverted in unproductive ways - fear, doubt, conflict, and obsessive, addictive behaviour. It's really the same energy at work, it's just being used in different ways. That's why it's almost impossible to be simultaneously excited and enthusiastic AND to feel stuck or angry.
In the end, these two poles of the spectrum - enthusiasm and, well, we'll call the other end "yucky" - are the fundamental parts of an on-board guidance system that can actually help us accomplish great things. The only problem is that no one ever got the instruction manual. We've been tricked into thinking that these are "good" feelings and "bad" feelings. While the yucky end clearly feels, well, yucky, it can also be a tremendous resource IF we learn how to read the signs the right way.
So that's what we try to do here at Emotus Operandi - help you work with your own guidance system, trusting to follow the flashing green light and learn effectively from the flashing red ones. Check out the main parts of the system to learn more about how we do it.
