The work we do at Emotus is predicated on a simple yet powerful understanding of emotions and work. I call that understanding the First Law of Emotional Dynamics.
Just like the First Law of Thermal Dynamics, we know that in a closed system, energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed. So, the first step in understanding how to work with that all-important emotional energy is to understand the different forms that it can take.
Emotional energy can be expressed in two basic ways. It can come through us as productive, enthusiastic work towards important goals or it can get diverted in unproductive ways – fear, doubt, conflict, and obsessive, addictive behaviour. It’s really the same energy at work, it’s just being used in different ways. That’s why it’s almost impossible to be simultaneously excited and enthusiastic AND to feel stuck or angry.
In the end, these two poles of the spectrum – enthusiasm and, well, we’ll call the other end “yucky” – comprise the fundamental parts of an on-board guidance system that can actually help us accomplish great things. The only problem is that no one ever got the instruction manual. We’ve been tricked into thinking that these are “good” feelings and “bad” feelings. While the yucky end clearly feels, well, yucky, it can also be a tremendous resource IF we learn how to read the signs the right way.
So that’s what we try to do here at Emotus Operandi – help you work with your own guidance system, learning to trust the flashing green light of enthusiasm and to effectively decode the flashing red lights of the yucky feeling. Check out the main parts of the system to learn more about how we do it.
